Desktop Secretary is an init which can perform some of the functions of the
Desktop Manager, but which doesn't get paid as much.
It owes its existence to the BMUG PD-ROM, which has grown to the point
where the resource manager cannot track the desktop database. There is a
folk remedy for this problem, which is to use the Desktop Manager init from
AppleShare.
But Apple wouldn't allow us to distribute Desktop Manager for a reasonable
fee.
So, I wrote Desktop Secretary, which reads files created by DM, and which
BMUG can afford to distribute.
To use Desktop Secretary, drop it into the system folder. It will then
take over the desktop management of volumes which have the desktop files
"Desktop DB" and "Desktop DF" if both of those files are finder-locked.
(They will be on the PD-ROM — who cares if they're locked if they're on a
CD-ROM?)
Desktop Secretary will not load on systems prior to 5.0 or 7.0 or later.
Desktop Secretary may be distributed for free, provided this notice is
included. It may not be sold, or included in a collection which is sold,
without my explicit permission.
